Who says you have to put your toys down when you have dinner, why not add them to the table.

Recently, I had the happy opportunity to indulge my geeky side on a bit of side quest: building three custom tracks for remote-controlled cars to rip around. As a keen miniature painter and modeller in my spare time, it was way too good an opportunity to pass up.

Built for Art Director Joe Munro alongside Komodo Studios, put together for a private PUMA x A$AP Rocky x Outlander Magazine dinner.

We started with three massive polystyrene blocks, CNC'd down into flowing race tracks with rolling, undulating hills wrapped around them. From there, we got to work building up the ground textures to mimic real terrain, pulling visual cues directly from the original shoot out in Elk Island. We also worked in the idents for all three brands, styling them so they felt like a natural part of the scenery rather than just slapped on.

Once the groundwork was sorted, it was time to add the character with the scenics. We laid down an initial blanket of static grass, then spent hours layering up hundreds of tufts and tiny flowers, dotting in the odd bush and tree to break up the lines and give the whole landscape some life. For the water features, we carved out ponds and poured clear resin, before finishing off with a mini car park charging stations on each layout.

With a final once over, a little added wildlife, rocks and more greenery to hide any messy bits of polystyrene showing through it was job done and ready to race. Joe made a great little video on instagram showing off his driving here.

Come delivery day, we loaded all three tracks into a van, brought them on-site, and slotted them into a pre-built table. With a few final tweaks and last-minute adjustments, and the tracks were prepped, looking mint, and with the glass added and table set we were ready for dinner.
